Our Approach

A ship is safe in harbor, but that's not what ships are built for.

Safe Harbor Counseling was named after this concept. Therapy can certainly be a shelter in the storm, a safe place to process life events and trauma. The end goal of your therapy is to help you learn skills and build awareness of self in order to go out into the world on your own, when you feel ready. Together we will fortify your "ship" to weather any upcoming storms.

First and foremost we believe that you are the expert on your life, not us. We believe that trust and safety is the cornerstone of a successful therapeutic relationship. The process will involve openness about what you are bringing to counseling, respect for you and your family, curiosity about who you are and what you believe, as well as accountability to our power in the room. We view our lives as a series of stories woven together to create our beliefs about who we are and how we interact in relationship with the people and world around us. Some of those stories have been authored by us, some authored by those in our lives. Together you will work to identify how you would like to re-story problematic or traumatic stories to create future stories that fit your vision for your life.

Our approach utilizes a strength based systemic approach including narrative therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems therapy (IFS), play therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
